CR&E personnel have extensive training with computational design and analysis. Process modeling is a critical tool for research, design, optimization and troubleshooting of plant performance. Troubleshooting facilities problems is a highly valued aspect of CR&E’s business.
CR&E utilizes CFD Modeling to allow their engineers to study complex phenomena with a high degree of accuracy. The engineers work on projects that range from plant design to CFD Modeling of process-upset conditions. CFD enables CR&E to examine plant design process without building a pilot plant, which provides a substantial cost savings. CFD can provide information such as system temperature profiles, gas flow rates, and flow patterns.
CR&E studies complex fluid flows and heat transfer problems to reveal important phenomena within complex geometries. Mass and Energy Balance Models provide information on thermal and chemical reactions within plant systems. The mass and energy balances have been developed for several plants utilizing CR&E’s proprietary Peak Vaporization Rate (PVR) Model. The PVR Model determines the time required to entirely vaporize chemical agents contained in different projectiles. These models have been refined and calibrated over the years to allow CR&E to accurately predict munitions-agent vaporization behavior within the demilitarization furnace systems. For example, CR&E used the modeling to study furnace residence times of various plant components at JACADS. These residence times are now used at all other United States Demilitarization Facilities.
